How do I obtain a marriage license in Wisconsin?100
Residents of Wisconsin apply for a marriage license in the county in which they live. Out of state residents apply in the county in which they will be married. Both individuals in the couple must show proof of residence. (Please check county websites for most up-to-date fee information.)
When should we apply for our marriage license?
Application must be made at least six (6) full days before the ceremony date, but no more than 30 days. Both individuals in the couple apply in person together. The County Clerk may waive the 5-day waiting period (day of application not counted) at his/her discretion and for sufficient reason (Example: Out of state or military applicants). There is a fee for this waiver.
Are witnesses required for a legal marriage in Wisconsin?
Yes. Two adult witnesses (18 years of age or older) are required in addition to the person officiating, but they do not have to be in the wedding party.
How much does it cost to obtain a marriage license?
The cost varies by county. In Outagamie County, the current cost is $115. In Winnebago County, the fee is $100. In Calumet County, the fee is $100. In Brown County, it is $125 and in Dane county, it is $120. In Door County, the fee is $100. Please check with your county clerk's office for all specifics. (Prices are subject to change.)
Do we receive a marriage certificate/license or proof of marriage from you?
No. You cannot keep your original marriage certificate/license nor make copies of it. Your marriage certificate/license is only of legal value if it is properly filed with the Register of Deeds in the county in which your marriage took place and must be filed by the wedding officiant. Certified copies of your marriage certificate may be purchased in the Register of Deeds office of the county in which your ceremony occurred.
Where will you perform weddings?
Any place you would like! I have performed weddings in traditional venues such as churches, synagogues, mosques, banquet halls, hotels, restaurants, parks, and back yards. I have also celebrated ceremonies in nontraditional settings such as cruise ships, golf courses, professional sports venues, over home plate on a softball field, on the beach, and in a hot air balloon. It is your day and I will do everything I can to make your ceremony dreams come true!
Will you travel to perform a wedding or other ceremony?
Absolutely! Please contact me to discuss specifics. There may be an additional charge for travel outside of the greater Appleton area.
Can we write our own vows?
Of course! Writing your vows for your ceremony is a very special way to personalize your commitment to each other. There are a variety of ways to express your sentiments and feelings and I would be happy to share the different ways you can do this when we work together on your ceremony.
Do you require pre-marital counseling?
No, I do not. Most couples do not choose to go through pre-marital counseling, but if you are interested in this service, I am happy to refer you to a qualified counselor.
Are you willing to include elements from our individual cultures or faith traditions?
Absolutely! I have worked with couples to include the following in wedding ceremonies I have performed:
Hand Fasting
Jumping the Broom
Breaking the Glass
Chuppah (Wedding canopy from the Jewish tradition)
Japanese Tea Ceremony
Buddhist Readings
and more
Can we have someone special to us do a reading during the ceremony?
Of course! It can be very meaningful to have a family member or friend do a reading during the ceremony.
Do you have suggested readings?
Yes, when I provide you with sample ceremonies to use to create your ceremony, I will also supply you with reading options, but you can also include a reading that is meaningful or special to you.
Should we tip the wedding celebrant/officiant?
If you are satisfied with the service and resources provided, it would be an appreciated gesture.
